Pre-Operative Instructions

  1. Our office will communicate your surgery date to you.  The hospital will also call you to confirm this date and tell you what time to arrive at the hospital.
  2. If you are scheduled at Houston Physicians’ Hospital or Brazoria County Surgery Center, the hospital will call you to perform a pre-operative assessment over the phone.  The nurse will take your health history, and tell you what medications to take or not to take on the morning of your surgery.  Necessary labs or tests may need to be performed before or on the day of surgery.
  3. If you are scheduled at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, please call (281) 929-6431 to schedule a pre-operative assessment 5-10 days prior to your surgery.
  4. Do Not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.  This does not include any medications you take for blood pressure, heart, stomach, asthma/lung, or seizure conditions.  If you are taking any of these types of medications, please take them at their regularly scheduled morning times, with a small amount of water, or as instructed during your pre-operative assessment.
  5. If you are diabetic, do not take your insulin or oral medications on the morning of surgery.  Your blood sugar will be monitored at the hospital, and appropriate medications given if needed.
  6. There are some medications which you must stop prior to any surgical procedure.  If you are taking any of these, please inform the office immediately.  These include:
    1. Blood thinning medications, such as aspirin, Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, or Ticlid.  These medications need to be stopped 7 days prior to surgery, and sometimes this will require clearance from the prescribing physician.
    2. Diet pills/appetite suppressants, such as(but not limited to) phentermine, adipex, fastin:  These medications need to be stopped 14 days before your day of surgery.
    3. Certain Herbal Supplements, such as fish oil, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba.  These medications need to be stopped 10 days prior to your surgical procedure.
    4. If you are unsure about any medications that you might be taking, please call the office to discuss your medication list.
  7. On the morning of surgery, do not apply any makeup, lotions, or body oils.  These may interfere with anesthesia or monitoring equipment during your surgery.
  8. Please remember to bring your picture ID and insurance cards with you to the hospital.
  9. If you think that you may be staying in the hospital, please remember to pack an overnight bag with your personal items.
  10. If you have any questions regarding any of your pre-operative instructions, please contact the office.
