Spine

  • Sciatica is pain, tingling, or numbness produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is formed by the nerve roots coming out of the spinal cord into the lower back. Branches of the sciatic nerve extend through the buttocks and down the back of each leg to the ankle and foot.

  • Low Back Pain This is a general discussion about low back pain.  Low back pain can affect the back anywhere below the ribs and above the legs.

  • Spinal Stenosis A condition whereby there is abnormal narrowing in the spinal canal. This narrowing limits the amount of space available for the spinal cord and nerves. As spinal stenosis becomes more severe there is compression or squeezing of the spinal cord and its nerves.  Spinal stenosis can occur anywhere in the spinal canal, but it is most common in the cervical and lumbar spine.

  • Herniated or Bulging Disk The bones (vertebrae) that form the spine in your back are cushioned by small, spongy discs. When these discs are healthy, they act as shock absorbers for the spine and keep the spine flexible. But when a disc is damaged, it may bulge or break open. This is called a herniated disc. It may also be called a slipped or ruptured disc.

  • Spinal Fractures A spinal fracture occurs when one of the bones in the spinal column breaks. This type of fracture is also known as a vertebral compression fracture because the bone that breaks (the vertebral body) often cracks and collapses, becoming compressed.

  • Degenerative Disk disease Degenerative disk disease is not really a disease but a term used to describe the normal changes in your spinal disks as you age.
